The Most Effective Ways to Promote your Band

Tags: for musicians, custom song, making music

So your band is the hottest thing since Nirvana, huh? That’s all well and good , but what does it really mean if no one ever hears you? In other words, along with being a musician, you also have to be a promoter and a marketer, getting the word out about your band to as many people as possible so they can appreciate your custom songs as much as you.

Here are a few tips for promoting your band to get your your custom songs jamming on everyone’s playlist:

  • Post flyers around your area and hold a free concert somewhere, like in your backyard, at the park or on the campus of your local junior college. Playing free is the best way to begin making a name for yourself. Play anywhere and anytime you can. You may even offer free food and drinks to the people who come! Whatever you need to do, get people to listen to your band and your custom songs. Pretty soon they will be looking for you and requesting the dates of your next gig.

  • Promote your band through t-shirts, hats, bumper stickers, and other objects. Pass them out at your free events, and introduce yourself to local bars, colleges, and restaurants then offer to pass out the free swag to their guests. Doing so will require an upfront investment, but one that will surely pay for itself in the long run.

  • Turn your custom songs into CDs and pass them out to anyone who will listen to them. Encourage people to pass the CDs onto their friends, too. Bring your custom CDs to radio stations and beg them to play your songs. You never know which station will put you on their playlist.

  • Use the power of social media to promote yourself. There is no other avenue that is quite as effective as social media. Make sure your band has a Facebook page, a Twitter page, and a website. If you can’t afford or don’t know how to make a website, start with a Tumblr page. Keep all social media platforms updated with the latest band information, and encourage your friends and family to spread the word until you begin to build a strong base. Social media spreads like wildfire, so always pass out flyers at your events with your social media information on it.

  • Keep your social media sites stocked with plenty of information, including band photos, event photos and, of course, audio recordings of your custom songs.

  • Write a blog for your band. Talk about upcoming information, thoughts on the music business, about the gig you played last night, or anything else on your mind! You can be sure your fans will read the blog and pass it on to their friends and family. Keep the circle of information flowing at all times by continuously posting new happenings with your band and let the new fans find you!
